Hastings Runners 5 Miler

Review by Simon Linklater

As a highly respected (at least that’s what I tell myself) member of Hastings Runners this review is clearly going to be biased. If it wasn’t I may well have those in senior position politely asking me to reword my account of the race.

In fact I don’t think it’s needs to be biased, for this is a great race. 5 miles isn’t my preferred distance as you actually have to work hard for a good 40 minutes rather than plodding along at a comfortable pace as I prefer. But I always enjoy this one.

The race HQ are next to the Hastings Town Hall, opposite the Odeon Cinema. The Priory Meadow Shopping Centre provides ample nearby parking and you can venture 2 minutes along the road and enjoy a nice coffee after the race.

The course heads out of the town onto the promenade, you pass the pier, duck under into bottle abbey and for incorporate the course used for Hastings Park Run, albeit in reverse. Apart from a few gentle inclines the course is prety much pancake flat and with very little twisting and turning, proving an excellent chance of getting a PB at this distance.

The finish is one of my favourites. Granted you may want to pinch your nose as you head down through the underpass but once you emerge you are only 100 meters or so from the finish line and with big crowds always gathered it provides the perfect opportunity to stretch the legs and produce a sprint finish.

This year we were met with good conditions as the wind was light and blowing less than 10 mph. I was pleased with my time of 41.20 which is a new PB over this distance. Hastings Runners as a club gets a great turn out and I believe we had 100 in attendance. The feeling of support from fellow club runners both during the race and afterwards creates a real buzz and makes this a special race for me personally.

The organization is first class. You collect your number of the day, but with a limit of 600 the queues are small. Bags can be left in the Town Hall which also provides a good spot for changing, before and after the race. I would highly recommend this 5 miler to anyone, especially if you are searching for that elusive PB over the distance.
