Rye 10K Summer Series

Review by Simon Linklater

Written 3rd August 2019

Without doubt, Rye Nature Reserve is one of my favourite places to run. I actually get a tad annoyed when other runners say they find it boring.

Granted if you run with your head down looking at the tarmac path for 10K & listening to the same old tunes on your headphones, then yes you’ll find it boring.

But open your eyes! Turn your head slightly! Be mindful and live for the moment.

Did you look to your left on the outward stretch and take in the amazing views across the harbour & beach? Is that boring?

Did you not see the sunsetting on the horizon? Or is that boring too?

What about the peace & tranquility of the nature reserve on a warm summer’s evening with a light breeze to keep you cool?

If you didn’t notice these things then I’m sorry but perhaps it’s you that is boring. Open your eyes, enjoy your surroundings, is that not what running is about?

This was the 2nd of 3 races making up the Rye Summer Series with a 5K still to come. It’s almost pancake flat and we were lucky that the winds were light and the temperature was cooling come the 7.30pm start.

168 runners turned up as Nice Work celebrated their 30th birthday and kindly put on a great selection of cakes to mark the occasion.

With Marathon training my main focus (apart from my online dating endeavours) and a long run planned 2 days later, I opted not to race and go for a time, but offer my services as a pacer (free of charge of course). I enjoyed the experience. It was nice not to be struggling for a change and just enjoy running.

It was great to run nearly the whole race alongside a fellow Hastings Runner and whilst not being able to move through the gears towards the end was a tad frustrating, it was the right decision given my main focus.

The club had another fantastic turnout and some of my running buddies smashed their PB’s and took home a prize. That always gives me great satisfaction, although I must admit I was a tad jealous of a few of them. Something for me to work towards once I’ve completed Bournemouth in October.

The winner actually beat the 12 year course record which is inspiring too. Seeing the leaders come back the other way and pass you at speed is a sight to behold.

I’ll be back, hopefully for many more years to come. Nice Work did a great job. But if there was one aspect that left me a little disappointed it was the race medal, but hey ho, you can’t have everything.

Don’t be Boring, open your eyes and clear your mind
