Worthing 10K 2019

Review by Simon Linklater

It felt like a big event. In terms of the number of runners it most definitely was a big event. But something was missing.

Perhaps it’s just the fact I’ve done a lot of half marathons this year and it was my first 10k. The course is a kind one. The PB potential is huge, very flat and some nice long straight stretches including the first 2km and the last 2km along the seafront.

The support as you get closer to the finish line is great. Further out on the course there were lots of spectators but most seemed happy to keep their hands in their pockets and mouths firmly closed. In fact I think the crazy lady (you know who I mean if you ran) made more noise on her own than the rest of the crowd. Thank You crazy lady.

Light winds cooled us down as it was a warm June morning. A few locals came out from their homes to sprinkle us with water from their hoses, which was a true delight in the humid conditions, although somehow I missed most of them and a light sprinkle on my shins was the best I managed.

There were no bands, no music out on the course, no drummers. I’ve come to take these for granted with my half marathons but the little things make a big difference.

I’d done the race in 2017 and 2018 and the medals take pride of place in my collection. But this year they changed the design and I have to say I was disappointed. If you’ve got the best medals, why change them?

In terms of my performance I was pleased to set a new 10km PB. It was expected to be honest given the hard work I’ve put in. But having woken early at 4:45am in anticipation, combined with the warmer temperatures, it was still no guarantee.

Parking was not a problem with a couple of multi storey car parks right by the race HQ. We got in and out of the town fairly quickly, so traveling by car seems the best option.

If you’re looking for a race to produce a 10km PB then this should be high up on your list. But I can’t help but think something was missing from this years Worthing 10k. Perhaps that’s me being a little harsh. Whether I’ll return next year is yet to be seen.
